Planting Timing

The best time to plant drought tolerant grass seed depends on grass family and soil warmth

Timing is one of the simplest ways to improve lawn success. Warm-season seed wants warming conditions. Tall fescue often performs best when planted into the cooler fall establishment window in many transition climates.

Warm-season planting window

Bermuda and zoysia need a healthier warm-up period to establish well. Too early, and the lawn stalls. Too late, and the hottest stress window arrives before the turf is ready.

Cool-season planting window

Tall fescue is often more comfortable in cooler establishment conditions. This is why fall keeps appearing in transition-zone lawn advice.

What to avoid

  • Do not plant simply because the calendar says spring without checking your soil and local temperature pattern.
  • Do not rush late-season seed that will not have enough time to establish.
