Why shade changes the ranking
Dry-climate grass guides often assume open sun. Once a yard is shaded by trees, fences, or buildings, the best grass is the one that can still establish and persist under reduced light without needing constant rescue.
What to evaluate first
- How many hours of direct sun the lawn gets
- Whether the shade is light afternoon cover or deep shade most of the day
- Whether the lawn is still expected to handle traffic
When not to force a seed lawn
If the yard barely receives meaningful direct light, the better answer may be to reduce turf expectations rather than keep chasing a bag that cannot overcome the site conditions.
